Waste Management Concept for High-level Radioactive Waste:

In the Russian Federation, spent fuel elements are first stored in reactor basins and  then transported to the reprocessing facility in Mayak or, alternatively, to an interim disposal facility. So far, there are no plans in the working for A final storage of spent fuel elements and high-level radioactive waste generated by reprocessing. In the past radioactive waste was compressed in drill holes. However, this procedure has been suspended due to criticism from the IAEA.

Final Disposal Situation for High-level Radioactive Waste:

No final disposal is planned and no investigation in this direction is known.

Problems:

The reprocessing facility in Mayak was first constructed for military reasons and is still being used for military tasks. Therefore, no clear division between the military and the civil domain exists. In addition, several serious accidents have occurred which has caused a high contamination in the area. No management concept exists for high-level radioactive waste generated by reprocessing.
